First of all, be sure to read through the report from our hard working Research Team. It is an excellent summary of issues as well as extra action items if you are interested in tackling more! You can find a link to the report on our Facebook page.
The big 3 items we want to tackle this week are the Gorsuch nomination for Supreme Court, continued resistance on repeal of the ACA, as well as continued pressure on the Russia investigation. We feel that the Gorsuch nomination in particular will have far reaching and lasting implications. Our resistance will have an impact, just like it has with the ACA.
If you can only get to one item this week..act on the Gorsuch nomination first!
New this week is a survey at the end of the list to help the Action Team know more about your experience in participating in the action items.
Save the ACA
Background: Although the ACA is still a moving target as the GOP makes changes, repeal of the ACA and the Republican replacement might come to a critical vote this Thursday in the House. We have 2 messages for Denny Heck. First, we want to THANK HIM for standing firm in opposing repeal of the ACA and the Trumpcare replacement plan, and we want to ask him what he is doing to encourage Republicans to also protect our country from these reckless changes.
ACTION: (All Day Monday 8am-5pm) Call Congressman Heck with a Thank You and a question. phone: 360-459-8514
Script: My name is _________. I live in District 10 and am a member of Olympia Indivisible. I am calling to give congressman Heck a BIG THANK YOU for his strong opposition to the repeal of the ACA. I also would like to know what he is doing to persuade other republican members of congress to join in protecting our country from the reckless replacement plan.
Act to Encourage Republican Members of Congress that are considering saying no to Trumpcare. This great list has lots of quick ways to encourage them. Let’s all focus on the first 7 on the list (Arizona and California) and then do more if you have the time. Help make the impact of repeal visible and personal.
This easy to use link will help you persuade Congress to say NO TO TRUMPCARE.
Save Our Democracy
Background: The House Intelligence Committee is having its first hearing on Monday, March 20, to review Russia’s interference in our election. Current interviewees include FBI Director James Comey and former AG Sally Yates (who, in January 2017, warned the WH that Flynn could be vulnerable to Russian blackmail).
Lawmakers are zeroing in on two questions, and are willing to play hardball. They are demanding the FBI clear up Trump’s claim that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower before the election. They also want to know whether the FBI is conducting any criminal investigations into Trump campaign aides for potential collusion with Russian officials. The FBI has not responded to questions regarding the latter. Our own Congressman Denny Heck is now on the House Intelligence Committee.
ACTION: Continue to ask our members of Congress to push for a full bipartisan and transparent investigation of the Russian hacking of the US election and connections between Trump campaign officials and Russian officials. We want them to know we will keep pushing until this is cleared up.
This is a quick, 30 second call to add your voice to the tally for this week.
script: My name is _______. I live in District 10 and am a member of Olympia Indivisible. I am calling to urge ______ to insist on a complete investigation into Russian Interference in our elections.

Gorsuch – Supreme Court nomination
Background: The judicial record of Trump’s nominee for Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch, is becoming well-known; he is not a moderate from any perspective. His record shows that he believes in the precedence of religious freedom protections over civil rights protections, was a part of the Bush administration efforts to redefine torture before he was a appointed to the bench, and has been supportive of business concerns over environmental protections and consumer protections.
Republicans have only 52 votes in the Senate, and need 60 to stop a filibuster. If all 48 Democrats vote No, the Republicans will have to invoke the ‘nuclear option’, eliminating the filibuster and allowing them to confirm Gorsuch with a simple majority. If 3 Republicans can be convinced to vote No on either the nuclear option, or confirming Gorsuch, then his nomination can be stopped. The Senate Judiciary Committee begins hearings on the Neil Gorsuch nomination today, March 20.
More background information here:
If the Gorsuch nomination can be stopped, it will change the dynamic of future Trump judicial nominations, including the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and District Court. It will be harder for Trump to nominate more extremists and be easier to derail bad candidates.
ACTION: Call Senator Murray and Senator Cantwell’s office, thank them for their opposition to Gorsuch, and ask them to do 2 things: Be ready to filibuster the Gorsuch nomination and to do everything they can to convince 3 republicans to join them in voting no. Tell them you will be following this very closely.
