First, a bit of background: Karen Fraser has been a lifelong public servant. She served at least two terms as a Thurston County Commissioner followed by two or three terms as State Representative for LD22 and several terms as State Senator for LD22. She gave up her senate seat to run for Lt. Governor in the 2016 election and, although she lost, she continues to support progressive Democrats as evidenced by her decision to hold the picnic as a venue for candidates despite the fact that she is no longer a candidate herself. I've known Karen for nearly 50 years and consider her a personal friend. My wife Annie also worked on the County Commission staff during Karen's term as Commissioner back in the late 1980s and we continue maintain a close relationship. With Karen, the warm caring person who you see is also the warm caring person who you get: she is the genuine article.
The picnic itself features an idyllic location with lots of room and free parking, plenty of shade and clean bathrooms, great food, plenty of beer, wine, soft drinks and entertainment provided by local musicians. Best of all, it provides opportunities to meet and greet candidates for local and state offices, ask questions, make donations, pick up yard signs and/or other campaign materials, and sign up to volunteer for those candidates who you find worthy of your support. It is one of the best ways, in a relaxed atmosphere, to get an overview of local Democratic candidates, to assess their qualifications and to gain insight into their vision.
