The Steering Committee Members of Olympia Indivisible, Grey Resistance Indivisible, Indivisible Thurston County and Concerned Citizens of Hartstine Island, representing 3,594 Indivisible Members, issued this letter today to Senators Murray and Cantwell, and Congressmen Heck and Kilmer.
Copies of the letter were also distributed to Governor Inslee, Washington State Senators Becker, Braun, Hunt and Sheldon, and Washington State Representatives Barkus, Wilcox, DeBolt, Orcutt, Dolan, Doglio, Griffey and MacEwen. (Representing LDs 2, 20, 22 and 35)
Dear Senator Murray, Senator Cantwell and Congressmen Heck and Kilmer,
We, the undersigned, are writing to you on behalf of our Indivisible chapters because we are deeply alarmed by the current wave of propaganda manufactured by POTUS, GOP strategists, politicians and the right-wing news media which is rippling across the nation. Fox News, GOP politicians, and right-wing pundits are parroting President Trump’s irresponsible and inflammatory rhetoric. His attacks on anyone supporting the Democratic Party or seeking to oppose his increasing authoritarianism are now painting us as an angry mob of radical, violent anarchists.
We need you to come forward with definitive and unflinching rebuttal of these hateful, false, and cynical assertions. All responsible elected representatives must speak out against this attempt to create a dangerous environment for the open, peaceful expression of divergent political views.
This is who we ARE: 100% volunteer-driven grassroots groups of citizens in Congressional Districts 6 and 10 who have come together to peacefully protect and revitalize our nation’s democratic institutions and progressive values and programs. We formed our chapters from our living rooms beginning in January 2017. Since then, we have met with our elected representatives and their staff, marched and rallied peacefully, registered voters, canvassed, phone-banked, and written letters to the editor of our local newspapers.
Political leaders who would impose authoritarian regimes must fear democracy and suppress peaceful political dissent. In branding those who do not swear unquestioning allegiance to him as violent, angry mobs, Trump and his supporters in politics and the media spread the idea that the Democratic Party in particular--and all political opposition in general, no matter how peaceful--are a threat to Americans. This is the road to unfreedom. We will speak out against these dangerous lies with courage and conviction, but we need you to use the power of your position now to stand with us and amplify our voices. Please speak out on our behalf and petition White House and Senate leadership to cease this dangerous rhetoric.
