Earlier this week Barbara Silverstein and I (Grey Resistance) along with Carla Wulfsberg and Heather Lockman (Olympia Indivisible) met for an hour each with Kierra Phifer on Sen Murray’s staff and Rosa McLeod on Sen Cantwell’s staff. In both offices we had lively discussions in which we offered our thanks to the Senators for many of their recent actions and asked them speak out even further on a range of issues including tax legislation, the right to good health care, protecting national parks and ANWR, the DREAM Act, gun control and the Mueller investigation. Both Kierra and Rosa listened carefully, asked questions, provided updates on the Senators’ positions, and promised to pass Indivisible concerns to the Senators. They both assured us that the Senators highly value this kind of constituent involvement. While the national political landscape these days is often discouraging and maddening I think all of us were energized by this opportunity to voice our concerns. It was just one act of involvement, but this is democracy in action and many voices from the bottom up will one day bring about the changes we so badly need.
